PERFORMING ARTS VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME

Performing arts volunteer abroad opportunity, Johannesburg South Africa, Volunteer Invest

The Performing Arts Volunteer Abroad Programme is for students and performers who want to live in a different social and cultural context in South Africa and apply their degree subject or career to a practical experience.

Nkosi’s Haven is an NGO in Johannesburg, and offers residential, holistic care and support for mothers and their children whose lives have been impacted by HIV/AIDS. Nkosi’s Haven also provides support for orphans, HIV/AIDS affected or not. It aims to improve the productivity of their residents through providing access to medical care, therapy, education and skill building workshops. The goal is to empower residents while providing a safe, dignified home in hopes that all mothers and children are able to become responsible and contributing members of society

Nkosi have hosted 19 visitor volunteers for two weeks every year, which include performing artists, some are from Julliard current or alumni and South African artists who hold workshops with the moms and kids. The programme culminates into a concert including all ages.

Nkosi’s Haven love international volunteers who take the initiative and implement activities and  projects related to performing arts. The ideas need to be presented to management and then adjustments and suggestions will be made based on age, culture and differences.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME INFORMATION

“A team of 18 Volunteer Artists recently wrapped up artsINSIDEOUT 2015, which took place from June 28 – July 11 for over 150 kids at Nkosi’s Haven, a residential facility for mothers and their children who are affected by HIV/AIDS. In addition to the traditional visual art, storytelling, music, and dance workshops offered, this two-week arts camp offered an engaging stagecraft class! The programme culminated in a final performance at the historic Market Theatre in Johannesburg for the entire community — it was an inspiring evening for everyone who participated. For a chance to see the show, check out the video above!”

“Since 2011, artsINSIDEOUT has gathered a group of working artists and students who have been personally affected by HIV/AIDS to travel to areas of the globe that have been hit hard by the AIDS epidemic and to connect with young people and mothers who have been similarly impacted. In June 2016, artsINSIDEOUT organized its sixth annual two-week arts intensive at Nkosi’s Haven in South Africa, which offers holistic care and support for mothers living with HIV/AIDS and their children, including orphans.

The theme for camp this year was “Zazise!,” a Zulu expression that means “introduce yourself.” Over 80 kids and 25 mothers took part in a variety of performing and visual art classes led by a team of 18 ASTEP Volunteer Artists that culminated in a show for the entire community at the historic Market Theatre in Johannesburg. The schedule is challenging: two-weeks to create, rehearse, stage and design a show but the final performance was incredible!”

Volunteers at Nkosi’s Haven fulfil an important role in the daily life of our organisation. Tasks cover a large variety of disciplines and include the following:
• handiwork
• monitoring store rooms & supplies
• after school homework assistance
• bed time story reading
• library maintenance
• organization of donations
• sports & recreation
• kitchen
• laundry

While many duties are already in place within the volunteer system, there is also the opportunity, based on the skills and interests of volunteers to establish new programsmes.

Examples of volunteer schedule

Depending on the time of the year  – i.e. if the kids are at school then their ‘duties’ in the morning would vary from ‘manual work’  – i.e. we may have a huge amount of donated clothes that need to be sorted out. There is often ‘handy man’ needs to be done and this could be anything from fixing shelves, door handles need replacing, paint jobs  – list is endless.

Then in the afternoon it would be assisting the children with homework.

If a specific volunteer is studying towards for e.g. Social Work that volunteer is more than welcome to put programmes together for the mums, teens etc (will be supervised by our social worker) and implement them.

Mums are keen to have computer lessons. Anything evolving round arts, crafts, gardening, kitchen, bakery, library, are all areas good for volunteers to participate in.

At weekends volunteers and caregivers will play games and organise film nights/movie evenings, this maybe built around a particular theme. This is sometimes split into ‘girls nights’ and ‘boys nights’ and the boys will play computer games. Volunteers will be briefed on what they can and what they cannot do with the children.

AIRPORT PICK UP/ DROP OFF

You will be collected from the airport off your flight, and you will be dropped back at the airport when you have concluded your volunteer programme.

TRAINING / ORIENTEERING

When you arrive, you will be shown around the village, and you will be assigned a ‘buddy’ who will be your guide and help you settle in.

ACCOMMODATION

International volunteers are housed together in one cottage at the Nkosi’s Haven Village location.

The cottage is equipped with:

  • refrigerator
  • television & DVD player
  • microwave & toaster
  • 2 bathrooms: 1 shower, 1 bath tub
  • shared living room

There are 2 rooms with cupboards for clothing, personal belongings etc. Valuables may be kept in a safe in the office depending on size.

Most house hold items such as cleaning materials, toiletries and the like are provided by Nkosi’s Haven. Any further supplies may be purchased at your own discretion at a nearby shopping centre.

Laundry services are provided once a week for volunteers

FOOD

You will be provided with 3x meals a day. This will be basic, local food, anything imported will be at additional costs. There is also a shop near by that you can top-up any food requirements during your stay.

SUPPORT

You will be guided through every step of your volunteer programme. You will be assigned a member of staff to answer any pre-trip questions. You will also have a member of staff at Nkosi’s Haven to help with anything whilst you are in South Africa.

You will have some time off to explore South Africa. The Volunteer Invest staff are happy to help arrange trips with you.

The Performing Arts Volunteer Programme starts from ****£350 per week****

Is there a minimum age requirement?

Due to the sensitive nature of some of our children, we require our volunteers to be aged 20 or older. However, similar to a high level of dedication we also expect an equally high level of maturity to be demonstrated. We also require proof of no criminal record/ finger printing clearance.

Where are international volunteers housed?

International volunteers are housed together in one cottage at the Nkosi’s Haven Village location.

Laundry services are provided once a week for volunteers in our Village laundromat but we ask that all undergarments be hand washed within the cottage.

How far are the nearest shops? Can volunteers shop for food themselves easily?

If walking it takes around 20-25 minutes. Our volunteers often go with our drivers to the local shop to do their shopping. Everything is pretty convenient. If walking, we advise volunteers to go in pairs, or 3’s.

What would be the main day-to-day task that volunteers will be involved with?

Depending on the time of the year  – i.e. if the kids are at school then their ‘duties’ in the morning would vary from ‘manual work’  – i.e. we may have a huge amount of donated clothes that need to be sorted out. There is often ‘handy man’ needs to be done and this could be anything from fixing shelves, door handles need replacing, paint jobs  – list is endless.

Can you tell me a bit more about the local area? What is are the safety concerns?

We are based on the far south side of Johannesburg which opens out to the countryside. Volunteers are safe, but must never walk around alone. As anywhere else in the world, theft happens in public spaces like restaurants of mobile phones. It is important to be observant of your surroundings. We also recommend you wear appropriate clothing, which won’t attract too much attention. .

Are there any projects that you would specifically like me to raise awareness of in the follow up to my trip?

One of the most useful things you can do is document your experience. How you are feeling before and during your programme, what you are hoping to gain, what were your biggest challenges, what gaps for improvement are you able to see? We have support documents for you to complete, and we encourage you to share your photos and experience on social media.

A journal or diary is a great way to remember your programme. The little day-to-day magical moments can be lost after 4, 8, 12 weeks of being away. Your experience and story will become key in future volunteers supporting the work of Nkosi’s Haven.

Where does my Volunteer Investment fee go?

We have established Volunteer Invest to raise important funds and offer life changing work experience to volunteers hoping to gain valuable hands on experience. Because of this, the fee has been set to offer a regular and sustainable income to Nkosi’s Haven, and a high percentage of the volunteer fee will be sent directly to them. They will then use this money to pay for hosting the volunteers, providing the accommodation for your stay, food transport and their running costs. The additional is kept back to develop the volunteer abroad programme and to recruit new volunteers to feed into the sustainable charity cycle.

If I have any further questions, who should I ask?

Volunteer Invest is here to help guide you through any questions or concerns you have, before, during and after your trip. So keep asking, and we will keep replying. You will also have on the ground support during your programme in South Africa.

Our receiving partner and VOLUNTEER INVEST as agents for the receiving partners plan the arrangements for your programme many months in advance and may occasionally have to make changes, most of which are minor.

If a major change becomes necessary, VOLUNTEER INVEST will advise you of the change as soon as possible. Whether a change is ‘major’ depends on the nature of the trip and may include a change in the type of programme or the country of destination for reasons beyond our control.

Compensation will not be payable if VOLUNTEER INVEST are forced to cancel, or in any way change your trip for reasons of consolidation due to minimum numbers not being attained or force majeure. Circumstances amounting to “force majeure” include any event which VOLUNTEER INVEST or the supplier of the service(s) in question could not foresee or forestall such as (by way of example and not by way of limitation) war, threat of war, riot, civil strife, industrial dispute, terrorist activity, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, acts of God, adverse weather conditions, and all similar events.

VOLUNTEER INVEST strongly recommend that you make no travel arrangements to your point of departure, arrange any connecting travel that is non-refundable or non-changeable or incurs penalties or incur any costs in respect of visas or vaccinations until such time as your travel itinerary has been confirmed.

VOLUNTEER INVEST strongly recommends that you take out insurance that includes cover against irrecoverable cancellation costs.

VOLUNTEER INVEST reserves the right to withdraw your application, without refund, if unable to make contact with you at the contact details provided; if you are late with any paperwork or payments; or in any other circumstances where VOLUNTEER INVEST is unable to obtain required information from you.

Our Liability, Conditions of Carriage and Limitations

  1. Our obligations, and those of our receiving partners providing any service or facility included in your programme, are to take reasonable skill and care to arrange for the provision of such services and facilities. You must show that reasonable skill and care has not been used if you wish to make any claim. Standards of, for example, safety, hygiene and quality vary throughout the transport and destinations that your programme may involve. Sometimes these standards will be lower than those that would be expected in the UK. The services and facilities included in your programme will be deemed to be provided with reasonable skill and care if they comply with any local regulations that apply.
  2. Our liability, except in cases involving death, shall be limited to at most the cost of your travel arrangements. In any event if less than this our liability in all cases will be limited in accordance with and/or in an identical manner to the contractual terms of the companies that provide the transportation and/or programmes for your travel arrangements. These terms are incorporated into this contract; and any relevant international convention. VOLUNTEER INVEST are to be regarded as having all benefit of any limitation of compensation contained in these or any conventions.
  3. VOLUNTEER INVEST shall have no liability where the cause of the failure to provide, or failure in, your programme or any death or personal injury you may suffer is not due to any fault on our part or that of our agents or suppliers or receiving partner, because it is either attributable to you, or attributable to someone unconnected with your programme and is unforeseeable or unavoidable, or is due to unusual or unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised, or an event which neither VOLUNTEER INVEST , nor our agents or suppliers could have foreseen or forestalled.
  4. If you purchase any optional activities that are not part of your pre-booked itinerary, the contract for the provision of that activity will be between you and the activity provider. The decision to partake in any such activity is entirely at your own discretion and risk. If you do have any complaint about, or problem with, any optional activity purchased in resort your claim should be directed to the activity provider and not to us. In the event of there being a successful claim for costs against a third party or a suitable insurance policy or policies being in force, VOLUNTEER INVEST are entitled to recoup from you the costs actually incurred by us in giving any assistance.
  5. VOLUNTEER INVEST may operate programmes in regions where standards of accommodation, transport, safety, hygiene, medical facilities and other infrastructure may, at times, be lower than those you normally expect. Your booking is accepted on the understanding that you realise the hazards involved in this kind of programme, including injury, disease, loss or damage to property, inconvenience and discomfort. The whole philosophy of this type of travel is one that allows alternatives and a substantial degree of on-trip flexibility. Changes in itinerary may be caused by events such as (by way of example and not by way of limitation) local political conditions, flight cancellations, mechanical breakdown, weather, border restrictions, sickness, or other unforeseeable circumstances.

Visas

South Africa does not require visas for UK passport holders. If you are from outside of the EU please let us know and we will find out details for you.

Flights from the UK range from £400-£600 depending on your time of travel. SkyScanner and Kayak are great ways to search for the lowest fares.
